PORTLAND — Colton Schilling’s hopes of four state titles faded fast.

The Sweet Home junior’s much-anticipated 4A 120-pound final with Henley’s Ronnie Bresser on Saturday night got away from Schilling quickly.

Schilling, who entered the bout with two state titles to Bresser’s one, trailed 4-1 early and could never recover.

With both wrestlers beating the other earlier in the season, Bresser won the rubber match 7-4 at Memorial Coliseum.

Getting momentum against another elite wrestler was going to be difficult, and Schilling just couldn’t gather it.

“A little bit of a letdown,” Schilling said after the match. “I’ve been expecting four titles. Losing one is tough, but I’ll bounce back and give it all I’ve got for next year.”

Sweet Home coach Steve Thorpe said the outcome doesn’t take away from what Schilling has accomplished.

“They’re two of the best wrestlers in the state of Oregon right now,” Thorpe said after the match. “I feel bad that Colton didn’t win. I’m not disappointed in him at all. I’m so disappointed for him right now.

“I can’t imagine what he’s feeling right now. He didn’t lose the match, he got beat today. There’s a big difference in that.”

Schilling’s points in the tournament helped the Huskies place third in the 4A division with 144 points and bring home a sixth straight team trophy for a top-four finish.

Philomath was 14th in the team standings with 40.5.

Schilling wasn’t the only Husky wrestler struggling against high-level competition.

North Marion’s Lucas Randall beat Sweet Home’s Tyler Cowger 9-2 in the 138 final to claim his third state title.

Randall, a senior took the lead with a takedown in the first few seconds of the match and never trailed.

Cowger, a junior, is now a two-time runner-up after losing the 135 title in 2011.

Teammate Wade Paulus took Beau Grauf to overtime before losing 5-3 on a takedown.

Sweet Home had eight placers in all.

Zach Gill (285) was third, Ty Harvey (132) fourth, Justin Nicholson (106) and Scottie Stockman (120) fifth and Chance Jucutan (182) sixth.

Philomath’s Zach Trask (145) was third and teammate Mikael Hill (152) was fourth.

Junior Cody Manzi hoped to become Santiam Christian’s first repeat state champion, but Nyssa’s Sebastian Sanchez had other ideas.

Sanchez was able to break Manzi’s takedown defense and earn a 9-3 victory in the 195-pound 3A state finals match.

Manzi won the 3A title in 2011 at 189 pounds, becoming SC’s second state champion.

Harrisburg’s Josh Hendrickson (132) and Clay McClure (138) were fourth. SC’s Jacob Howard (145) and Harrisburg’s Loren Traw (182) were fifth.

Scio junior Josh Parazoo made it to the top of the awards stand, beating Jacob Jeffries of Riddle 6-4 in the 285 final.

Jeffries had closed within 4-3 on an escape with 75 seconds left, but Parazoo answered about 30 seconds later with a takedown.

“I knew it was over. I knew I could ride out just about anybody,” he said.

Central Linn’s Josue Avilez (138) and Kaleb Gilbert (170) were third and teammate Mark LaCoste (160) was fourth. Monroe’s Zach Bowman (285) was also fourth.
