Adrian Lyons-Lopez of South Albany High jumped up immediately after the referee slapped the mat and shot his hands in the air.
Lyons-Lopez had just pinned top-seeded Rudolfo Hernandez of Woodburn to take first at 138 pounds at the Mid-Willamette Conference district wrestling meet on Saturday at Crescent Valley High.
Emotion overcame Lyons-Lopez as he embraced coaches and teammates.
Dallas won the team title with 408.5 points with Lebanon second at 315.
Hernandez had won both meetings in the regular season with the second-seeded Lyons-Lopez.
This time Lyons-Lopez came out and controlled the match from the start.
The plan was for Lyons-Lopez to get the first takedown and stay on top as much as possible.
“He was not expecting how hard I pushed him against the mat. I pushed him hard up top,” Lyons-Lopez said. “He’s pretty good on his feet, but once we get to the ground I know I can take him. So I made sure I stayed on top of him and the strategy worked great.”
Lyons-Lopez said he’s been getting stronger throughout the season and is now hitting his stride with the state meet coming up.
“I feel like districts I definitely peaked, I hit my peaking point and I hope it just follows on to state,” he said.
The expected showdown at 132 between Crescent Valley’s two-time district and state champion Alex Rich and district champion Charlie Vandetta of Lebanon did not materialize.
Rich said Vandetta was dealing with lower back problems.
Rich said it was tough but good to let Vandetta rest and get ready for state.
“He’s my friend and I didn’t really want to see him hurt and not be able to go to state,” Rich said. “I’d rather have him be healthy for state and do the best he can at state.”
Rich said he should be good to go for the state meet despite a short district meet.
“I felt really good. The tournament went well for me,” he said. “I only got two matches but in those matches I felt I did fairly well. I’m ready to go and do what I can.”
Lebanon’s Andrew Nelson was just fine at 113 pounds and upset top-seeded Austin Reed of Silverton for the title.
Nelson, a senior, jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first and then clinched it with a takedown in the third.
Nelson said he was prepared for Reed’s quickness this time.
“I wrestled him earlier this year and lost by one and I knew I had to come out and bring my ‘A’ game,” Nelson said. “I just came out aggressive and got after him and just competed as hard as I could and came out on top.”
West Albany’s Jackson Soto (195) came out strong in the second period and wound up pinning Caleb Naughton of Dallas.
Soto said they were both undefeated in conference matches and did not face each other until Saturday.
“I’ve only had one match besides districts in the last three weeks because guys just didn’t have 195 pounders,” Soto said. “So getting in here and getting a good kid like that who’s going to be going to state and he’s going to make a dent in the 195 bracket at state, it’s good.”
