PORTLAND — The Oregon State men’s soccer team suffered its second defeat of the season Thursday evening in a 3-0 loss to the University of Portland at Merlo Field.
“In soccer sometimes you can outplay a team and outshoot a team, but it just turns out the wrong way, and that’s what happened tonight,” coach Steve Simmons said. “We just made some bad mistakes. If there’s something we can take solace in, it’s that it wasn’t about ability and it wasn’t about tactics, it was about some mistakes that are fixable. This will sting for now, but we will move on from this.”
The Beavers outshot the Pilots 13-10 on the evening, and held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Oregon State (5-2-0) opened the first half with the lion’s share of possession, but the Pilots responded by creating some strong scoring opportunities of their own late in the opening frame.
Portland (4-2-0) opened the scoring with three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the first half. Matthew Coffey played a pass that found Jaime Velasco on the left side of the box, one-on-one with sophomore goalkeeper Matt Bersano.
Velasco chipped the ball over Bersano and into the net to give the Pilots a 1-0 edge.
Senior Josh Smith had a chance to level the score in the 44th minute, but the right-back headed the ball just wide of goal and the Beavers entered the intermission trailing, 1-0.
The Pilots stretched the lead to two 14 minutes into the second half. Eddie Sanchez fired a shot on the half-volley from 22 yards out that flew into the left side of the net.
Pilot Dunstin Munger received a red card for a challenge in the 80th minute to give the Beavers a man advantage for the final 10 minutesa. Senior Daniel Van Vleet took a shot from close range in the 83rd minute, but goalkeeper Jason Dodson made a nice save to deny the attempt.
Velasco scored his second goal of the night with 20 seconds remaining. Velasco controlled the ball on the right side of the box after a failed clearance and placed a shot into the net to give the Pilots the three-goal victory.
OSU will to return action Sunday when they face San Jose State at Paul Lorenz Field. Pac-12 Networks will carry the game.
