A woman was killed and a man was injured Saturday morning in a single-vehicle crash on Diamond Hill Drive near the intersection with Weatherford Road, east of Harrisburg.
According to a Linn County Sheriff's Office investigation, Jamie Michelle Nephew, 51, of Salem, drove a white 2011 Jeep Patriot off the roadway and struck a culvert, taking flight for 80 feet before landing back on Diamond Hill Drive. The Patriot then entered a field, where it came to rest. Nephew got out of the vehicle but succumbed to her injuries.
Her passenger, Robert Earl Sims, Jr., also of Salem, remained inside. Fire crews freed him by cutting off his seat belt. He was transported to Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield with minor injuries.
LCSO deputies, who responded at around 9:57 a.m., were assisted by members of the Harrisburg and Coburg fire departments. A Linn County deputy medical examiner helped with the investigation. Aasum-Dufour Funeral Home of Albany also responded to the scene.
Drugs may have been a factor in the crash, officials said. The investigation is continuing.
