Linn County Undersheriff Bruce Riley filed for the office of Linn County sheriff on Sept. 26. The last date to file for the position is March 11, 2014.

Riley was appointed by Linn County Commissioners to take the place of Tim Mueller who will retire Dec. 31, 2013, a year before his term is up. That appointment will expire at the end of 2014, when Mueller’s term would have ended.

“I appreciate the opportunity to have served as Undersheriff for the last four and a half years under the leadership of Sheriff Tim Mueller,” Riley said in a press release. “I believe Sheriff Mueller has done an outstanding job representing the citizens of Linn County by continuing the long standing practice of delivering a full array of top quality law enforcement services.”

Riley has been with the sheriff’s office for 26 years.

“Linn County has been my home all my life. I believe this is a great place to live and raise a family,” Riley said.

He and his wife have lived in Tangent for 17 years.

He graduated from the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training Basic Police Academy.

He implemented the Linn County Sheriff’s Office first D.A.R.E. program, raising thousands of dollars for D.A.R.E. He taught anti-drug curriculum to children in Linn County schools for two years.

Riley has held every rank within the chain of command in the sheriff’s office. Over the years, he was promoted up through the ranks within the patrol division.

In 2005, he was promoted to captain and served as patrol division commander.

Riley was promoted the undersheriff on Jan. 1, 2009.

In June 2009, Bruce attended the 62nd session of the Law Enforcement Executive Development Seminar hosted by the FBI.

Riley holds an associate degree in criminal justice.

He is dual certified in police and corrections through the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards & Training and holds executive level certification in both disciplines.

Riley volunteers in his community by serving as a board member for the Tangent Rural Fire Protection District and is a member of the Albany Optimist Club.
