The Lebanon Fire District is cautioning businesses with required fire alarm systems to check with their fire alarm monitoring service if they are considering the switch from standard land line phone service to digital technologies like voice over internet protocol (VoIP), digital subscriber line (DSL), or cellular radio.
After fielding several calls from businesses that have switched or are considering switching, it has come to our attention that the technologies used are not always compatible. Most alarm systems communicate over standard telephone lines, newer technologies such as VoIP must be compatible with that method of transmission or the signal from the fire or burglar alarm may not be received by the monitoring central station. Additionally some newer technologies such as VoIP do not work during power outages.
The fire code defines the conditions that must be met for a required fire alarm system to be approved, but more importantly, your insurance may not cover any losses if the business has failed to meet the fire code. Please investigate these issues prior to making any changes to your alarm system and/or phone service so that you do not open your business to liability should a loss occur.
