Jack K. Schmidt, 78, of Sweet Home, passed away at home on Sunday, January 27, 2019.
He was born in Orange, California, to Kenneth and Dawn (Treece) Schmidt.
Jack joined the Navy in 1958. He served in Vietnam and was awarded a Bronze Star. After his honorable discharge in 1961, he returned to California.
Jack married Judith Ann Head on June 9, 1962, in Westminster, California. He worked as a police officer with the Los Angeles Police Department for 26 years. Jack and Judith moved to Sweet Home in 1989, where he has lived since. Once in Oregon, he worked in the woods until retiring.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, making knives, working as a gun smith, and traveling. Jack was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church in Sweet Home and the VFW Post 3437.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Dawn Schmidt; and brother, Robert Schmidt.
Jack is survived by his wife, Judith Ann Schmidt of Sweet Home; daughter, Catherine Lindsay of Sweet Home; son, Kenneth Schmidt of San Pedro, California; daughter, Stacey Kent of Diboll, Texas; brother, William Schmidt of Kerrville, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 10, at Gilliland Cemetery in Sweet Home. Following the service there will be a celebration of life at the Sweet Home Veterans Club Post No. 3437.
