November 9, 1925 — March 8, 2019

Erling Frederick Brauti, known as Fred, passed away peacefully at home on March 8, 2019. He was born November 9, 1925 on the coast in Wheeler, Oregon where he attended grade school and high school. He graduated in 1943 in the middle of World War II and after graduation enlisted in the Navy’s V-12 Program in Pocatello, Idaho. After eight months he was transferred to the NROTC at the University of Minnesota where he graduated in February of 1946 with a degree in Naval Science and Tactics, commissioned as an Ensign USNR. Fred was sent to the Navy Base in Newport, Rhode Island and assigned to the USS Cleveland. His service was completed in July of 1946.

After returning to Oregon that summer he entered Oregon State University in the school of Pharmacy, graduating in 1949. He enjoyed many years of friendships and experiences with his fraternity brothers at the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

In 1953 he graduated from the University of Oregon Medical School (now OHSU) in Portland. He went back to Minneapolis, Minnesota to complete an internship and residency in Radiology at the University of Minnesota, finishing in 1958. He joined a private radiology practice at Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis. In 1963, on a blind date, Fred met the love of his life, Mary Koch, and they were engaged three months later.

In 1966 Fred and Mary moved back to his beloved Oregon. While showing Mary where he went to college, he recognized the names of two navy buddies, Art Ovregaard and Mike Merrill, on a sign for Corvallis Radiology. They offered him a partnership where he practiced until retiring in 1987. Fred and Mary enjoyed 56 years of marriage and had three children, David, Susie and Annie.

He believed in giving back to the local community where he lived a wonderful life with his family and his legacy will be felt by many. The Oregon Community Foundation, the Benton County Foundation, Oregon State University and Oregon Health Sciences University Foundation are just a few recipients of his humble generosity.

Fred loved spending time with his children and grandchildren and watching them participate in their activities. He was curious about technology and used it to keep in touch with friends, but especially his grandchildren through FaceTime, email and text. He was an avid Beaver fan, enjoyed traveling the world with Mary, golfing, pheasant hunting, fly fishing, reading and playing bridge. He was very proud of his Norwegian heritage and a real history buff.

Fred was a kind and gentle man with a great sense of humor and an endless supply of memories and good stories.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; three children and six grandchildren: David (Trina) Brauti, granddaughters Annie and Katie; Susie (Andy) Albrecht, grandsons Jack and Joe; Annie (Ken) Michels, twin grandchildren Andrew and Meghan.

There will be a private family memorial service held at the Willamette National Cemetery. A celebration of life in Fred’s honor, will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 28 at the Corvallis Country Club.

Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Oregon Community Foundation/Brauti Family Fund, 440 E. Broadway, Suite 160, Eugene, OR 97402.
