Police Tape

A Lebanon man was accused of sex crimes in Linn County Circuit Court on Monday afternoon.

Cody Dean Coulter, 23, was charged with first-degree unlawful sexual penetration and two counts of first-degree sex abuse.

According to the charging document in the case, the child was a female victim under the age of 8 and the crimes occurred sometime between 2010 and 2018. The alleged crimes took place in at least two separate instances, court paperwork states.

Coulter knew the victim.

At least one of the charges is a Jessica’s Law crime, which means that Coulter could face 25 years in prison if convicted.

Prosecutor Alex Olenick asked for $200,000 bail during Monday’s videoconference hearing. Defense attorney Tyler Reid, handling a session of several arraignments from the Linn County Jail, countered by asking for $50,000 security, the minimum amount allowed by statute for such a crime.

Reid added that anything above $50,000 bail would be impossible for Coulter to obtain.

Judge DeeAnn Novotny set Coulter’s bail at $100,000.

The next hearing in the case will be on Feb. 26.
