A man who allegedly poured gasoline on a doghouse and set it on fire on his family’s Albany property was charged Tuesday afternoon in Linn County Circuit Court with first-degree arson.

Dylan Aaron Jokinen, 20, had his bail set at $20,000 by Judge Rachel Kittson-MaQatish.

The prosecution has filed a notice of intent to seek an enhanced sentence in the case, arguing that the offense placed others in danger of serious physical injury.

The incident occurred Aug. 13 in the 2600 block of Sherman Street Southeast at about 10 p.m.

According to a probable cause affidavit in the case, Jokinen’s mother was awakened that night by his sister, who heard a glass break.

Jokinen’s mother worried that her house was going to catch on fire before she extinguished the flames, according to the affidavit.

“She told me she was ‘terrified,’” wrote an officer who investigated the case.

“She could not articulate the size of the flames. However, she used her hands to motion the size and it was as broad as her shoulders, and she is a grown adult. … She said she was also thankful her daughter woke her up because the house could have caught on fire,” the affidavit continues.

The doghouse was about two-and-a-half feet away from the family’s house, and one of its corners was approximately six feet under the house’s awning. There were cans of gasoline within four feet of the fire and directly next to the structure, wrote an officer who investigated.

“The gasoline cans likely would have ignited from the flames or sparks had (Jokinen’s mother) not extinguished the fire,” the affidavit states.

Family members also indicated that Jokinen may have been on methamphetamine during the incident, according to the affidavit.

When an officer responded to the scene, Jokinen, who was shirtless, took off running from the back yard and jumped fences as he fled, the affidavit states.

He was arrested by the Albany Police Department at his family’s property on Saturday.
