Two records were set and Crescent Valley’s string of championships was broken Saturday at the Mid-Willamette Conference girls district meet at Osborn Aquatic Center.

The Raiders had won the meet six years in a row, and followed up the first five of those district titles with 5A state championships.

But West Albany broke through, winning all three relays and earning 477 team points to defeat Crescent Valley (418.5). Corvallis High was third at 302.

“I think this is actually the first time the West Albany girls have ever won district,” said Bulldog coach Babette Romancier. “We looked through the trophy case one day and couldn’t find anything, and there’s some old stuff in there.”

Britney Baker had the lone individual victory for West Albany, winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 59.17 seconds, edging Corvallis High’s Zoey Rochefort (1:59.72).

“I was nervous at the start because I knew Zoey was going to take it out fast,” said Baker, who swam well despite the lingering effects of a sinus infection. “I had to go out fast and take charge.”

While the Bulldogs won just four events, their team depth proved to be the difference.

“My team swam great. So many girls posted their best time,” Romancier said.

Rochefort finished second in the 200 freestyle but she bounced back later to win the 500 freestyle in 5:09.73, 8 seconds faster than her closest competitor.

Lebanon sophomore Maddy Kelly set a district record in the 50-yard freestyle at 24.55 seconds, breaking the mark of 24.89 set by Crescent Valley’s Jordan Iverson in 2007.

“I wasn’t too worried about it, I just wanted to go as fast as I could,” Kelly said. “It’s an awesome feeling. I’m still a little shocked.”

Crescent Valley sophomore Allison Wells won two events, winning the 100 freestyle in 53.51 seconds, and breaking her own district record in the 100 backstroke. She posted a time of 59 seconds last year as a freshman and finished in 58.28 seconds on Saturday.

“I was hoping for it, but I definitely wasn’t expecting it,” said Wells, who said that having Kelly in the next lane was helpful. Kelly finished second in 1:00.48. “It helped to have her there to push me.”

Wells said it was tough to see the Raiders’ dominance at district come to an end.

“It’s a little disappointing considering we’ve had such a long streak of winning at district. We just have to focus on doing better at state than we did last year,” Wells said.

South Albany freshman Molly Beamer continued her strong season with district titles in the 200 IM (2:14.15) and the 100 butterfly (1:00.13).

Beamer trailed West Albany’s Charity Hanke throughout the butterfly final, only catching her rival in the final five yards. Hanke finished in a personal-best 1:00.38.

“On my last stroke, I was ‘Oh my God, am I going to do this?’” Beamer said. “Probably the scariest race of my life. I was panicked.”

Jerusha Dressel of Dallas won the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.34.

Each of the event winners automatically qualify for next week’s state championships, with the remaining slots in the state meet to be determined by district meet results.
