Austin Dalton has returned from his trip to Wisconsin for the wrestling national championships and he is not coming home empty handed. Dalton took home the championship in Greco-Roman as well as a third place finish in freestyle wrestling.
The championships took place from in Madison, Wisc., then at another tournament in Pocatello Idaho, he won the Greco roman style as well as freestyle while finishing second in folkstyle.
Austin is quickly rising the ranks of the 95 pound division. Last year, he wrestled at 90 pounds and his points did not carry him to as high of a ranking as he may have hoped. Despite that, Dalton worked his way through the ranks to bring some hardware back to Oregon.
Austin had to deal with a new crop of wrestlers as the location had been moved from Salt Lake City to Wisconsin bringing in more athletes from the east coast where the west coast athletes did not travel to the event.
With the move to 95 pounds, Austin found himself against the top rated wrestler in the country at 95. Austin went down 8-0 quickly in the first few moments of the match
“He tried for a take down and slipped. I looked at him and said ‘It’s time to go to work.’ He didn’t panic and then he threw the kid for four points and then pinned him for the win,” father T.R. Dalton said.
After losing to the same opponent in freestyle, Austin wrestled again twice to earn the third place distinction.
After his appearance at nationals, Austin competed in Pocatello and dominated the field, medaling in all three events, winning two of them.
“It was some of the best wrestling I have seen him do in a long time,” T.R. said.
While Austin and T.R. are the only ones from Lebanon to make the trip, they could not have gotten there were it not for their sponsor, IMI, Ixtapa, Knot Hole, West Coast Industrial and Meyer Embroidery, T.R. said. The Daltons also want to give a special thanks to Dr. Barish for his donation to make their journey possible.
