Oregon is fortunate to have tens of thousands of dedicated and passionate teachers educating children across the state and during National Teacher Appreciation Week, May 7 to May 12, we should all take time to say “thank you."
Over the past 15 years I’ve been an educator and an administrator. I know first-hand what it’s like to teach in a traditional brick-and-mortar classroom and in a statewide online public charter school like Oregon Connections Academy. Both gave me an opportunity to help students gain academic achievements.
When people hear about virtual education they often think about technology and online classes, they may not consider the high quality, state certified teachers who make the school so successful. At ORCA I appreciate our talented and committed teachers who understand how to engage students because they’re specially trained in online instruction, and can adapt learning techniques to meet students’ needs.
Teachers at our school tell me they value having the ability to provide personalized one-on-one instruction with students to assist with difficult assignments or other issues and teachers frequently get to know families much better as well.
ORCA families also give our teachers high praise. According to our school’s most recent surveys 95 percent of parents and students were satisfied with the helpfulness of ORCA teachers, and 94 percent of parents agreed that the teachers improved the learning experience.
Virtual public school is a good option for a variety of reasons, but it may not be the right fit for every child. The same holds true for teachers. However, just like our students do school from home, our teachers also have the flexibility to work from home which really cuts down on the morning commute.
Teaching can be a challenging, yet very rewarding career. I am so thankful to those who have chosen this profession because at the end of the day it’s helping every student succeed that matters most. So, regardless of the type of school, public or private, brick-and-mortar or online, National Teacher Appreciation Week reminds us to show our gratitude and respect for teachers everywhere, every day.
