June 11, 1921 — March 7, 2017
William “Bud” F. Moynihan, 95, of Lebanon passed away at his home on Tuesday, March 7, 2017.
Bud was born June 11, 1921, in Manchester, Connecticut, the son of M. Clifford and Sarah (Wright) Moynihan. He moved to Salem as a child and graduated from Salem High School. He attended the Naval Academy in Annapolis and received his pilot training at Pensacola. Bud flew the PB4Y-2 Privateer Bomber and the PBY Catalina (American Flying Boat) in the South Pacific during World War II.
Bud loved both his time at sea and in the air with the United States Navy and continued to fly with the Naval Reserve after his active service. Upon returning to Oregon he attended Willamette University where he received his bachelor’s degree in U.S. history and government. He taught history at Lebanon High School and served as the athletic director of nearly 30 years, retiring in 1979.
Bud deeply loved his wife, Viola M. Scott, of Lebanon and they were together for almost 70 years when Vi passed away on March 14, 2012. Bud enjoyed fishing and was an expert fly fisherman. “Grandpa” helped many of his grandchildren and others catch and clean their “first fish.” Both Bud and Vi were avid golfers, enjoyed camping and ocean salmon fishing together. They traveled extensively including over 40 trips to England buying antiques for the family business, but most of all they loved their family and attended as many events of children and grandchildren as possible.
Bud is survived by his daughter, Betty Lou Rockwell of Port Angeles, Washington; sons Gary R. Moynihan of Aumsville, William S. Moynihan of Corvallis and Walter M. Moynihan of Siletz; brother Larry Moynihan of Grants Pass; sister June Spencer of Washington, Ruth McDonald of Oregon and Mary Cox of Washington; 14 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
At his request, no services will be held. His family suggests donations in his memory be made to the Wounded Warrior Project in care of Huston-Jost Funeral Home, 86 W. Grant St., Lebanon, OR 97335.
