Bob passed away November 7, 2017, at home. He went peacefully with his wife and loving family at his side.
Bob was born in Portland to Luther and Edna Thompson. Around age three, the family moved to Monroe. Bob attended school in Monroe until he decided to join the US Navy during his senior year.
Bob served in the US Navy from 1966 to 1969. While in the Navy, Bob received his GED. He was very proud of that and for serving his country. Bob left the Navy in April 1969, shortly after he met his future wife, Helen Kelso. The couple were married July 18, 1969.
Bob and Helen made their home in Harrisburg, where they raised their family. Bob worked at AmericanCan Paper Mill in Halsey, Oregon from 1974 to 2007.
After retiring, Bob and Helen started RVing and loved to travel, visiting family and friends and fishing-Bob “loved” to fish.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Helen of 48 ½ years; daughter Delisa Magelky and husband Martin; son Rob Thompson and wife Christa.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, Luther Thompson of Bates, Oregon, and Edna (Davis) Thompson of Echo, Oregon; brother-in-law, Buck Putney of Bellfountain; and brother-in-law, Lynn Wilson of Cottage Grove.
Survivors are his sisters, Sharon Wilson of Cottage Grove and Carolyn Ballard of Monroe; brothers, Tom Thompson and wife Barbara of Monroe and Ron Thompson and wife Vicki of Alpine, Oregon; cousins, Wanda Madsen and Marlene Woodley of Prairie City, and Judd Olp of Harrisbug. Bob is also survived by his five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren that he loved with all his heart and was so very proud of, plus one great-grandchild on the way; numerous nephews and nieces; seven sisters and brothers-in-law and many, many wonderful friends.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 9 at the new gym building beside Monroe High School with a lunch will follow.
