Doreen Eldora Githens was born at home June 7, 1919 in Peoria, Oregon on the donation land claim of her great-grandparents, the James Garretts. Her parents were Russell and Fay (King) Githens. She attended Peoria Grade School, graduating from Shedd High School in 1937. She played for the Corvallis Girls’ Softball Team from 1939 – 1941.
On September 27, 1941, she married Lyle Eagy at Peoria Christian Church, where they later celebrated their 50th anniversary.
During World War II, she worked for Benton County Bank while Lyle served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific.
In 1958, she was hired as Deputy Clerk for Central Linn Schools and served until her retirement in 1982.
Doreen’s passion for volunteering saw her serving on the first Oregon State Citizen’s Review Board in Linn County; Linn County museum boards, Historical Society, and CASA.
Doreen was a friendly face at blood drives and polling places for many years.
She served as president and secretary of the Tri-County Little League and coached the Brownsville team for several years. Her 1965 championship team included five players (Stewart Overton, Phil McLain, Roger Isom, Tony Koontz, and Alan Eagy) who later were starters on the Central Linn 1970 State Championship baseball team. Doreen kept score for the Central Linn summer-league and high school baseball teams and was scorekeeper for the Central Linn boys’ basketball team for 13 years. She also kept score for her granddaughter Kaci’s high school and summer softball teams. She had a combined 30 years of scorekeeping.
Doreen was honored as Grand Marshal of the Brownsville Pioneer Picnic Parade in 1991.
Hobbies Doreen enjoyed include sewing, reading and volunteering. She made many flannel baby quilts for her grandchildren and others.
She was an avid sports fan, enjoying any sport in which her grandchildren participated, and especially loved watching the OSU Beavers and Seattle Mariners.
Doreen attended the Halsey Methodist and Brownsville Presbyterian Churches. She taught children’s Sunday school for 12 years.
Survivors are daughters Diana Eagy of Harrisburg, Marlene (Kermit) Logan of Brownsville; son Alan (Bev) Eagy of The Dalles; grandchildren Katie, Rip, Andrea, Melissa, Bryan, Kaci, Jessica, Rachel and Kole; great-grandchildren Marnette, Tobiah, Rob, Elizabeth, Waylon, Maxwell, Tristian, Noah, Brynne, Karsen, Creighton, Greyson, Bridger, and 10-day old Emerson.
Doreen was preceded in death by her husband Lyle; infant daughter Maysel Jean; and brothers Bill and Ron Githens.
Memorial contributions may be made to Central Linn baseball, care of Central Linn High School.
In keeping with her selfless nature, Doreen donated her body for scientific research.
Doreen loved the Lord and her family very much. She met Jesus on September 22, 2017 in room 316 of Samaritan Albany General Hospital. Lyle’s favorite scripture was John 3:16.
A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 22, 2017 at Central Linn High School. Please join us in honoring mom by wearing your favorite team’s sports apparel. A dessert/visit time will follow.
